Commuter's Cadence

On June 20, 2011 I turned 56 years old. That day, my bicycle odomoter turned over at 10,000 miles on the way to work. Not exactly sure when I started the odometer, but a milestone never-the-less. My goal is to add two thousand miles in 2011.
With a job change to Sun Prairie in 2009, I thought my bike commuting days were over. But, after six months, I had to find a way. Not as pleasant as the ride over to Fish Hatchery, but being able to bike is still a huge bonus. The over-twenty mile round trip is on some quite busy roads, so I now wear a spiffy orange vest to be more visible.

A gorgeous spring day for biking to work. This afternoon we will work on getting fencing around the vegetable garden, so the rabbits will have to munch elsewhere. They seem to have enjoyed eating the blossoms off the tulips, tho Tom insists it might have been giant ground sloths that are responsible.

So, the number one biking city of it's size, as declared by Bicycling Magazine, suffered a February blizzard on Thursday, but I did hear that by late afternoon that day, the Southwest Bike Path had been cleared. This was frustrating news to someone who had hoped to ski home from work.

After a snowy December, with the bike sitting in the garage, it has been a mild January and I am back on the bike. Today was sunny and 50 as I biked home at 1:30 p.m. Glad to be out in the sun, but would rather have snow!
It looks like beavers have been busy along Wingra Creek; a number of small trees are down, signs of nibbling on the bark of larger trees. Are they trying to build a dam somewhere?

A rainy Sunday morning; so much for our plans to get out and ride our bikes today. Am trying to get my odometer up to 3000 miles by the end of December.
